Recycling Around Your Office

Recycling is an environmentally friendly act and can be initiated anytime. First determine which material you want to recycle; such as glass, plastic, aluminum, paper and/or cardboard boxes. Next, find someone to pick up the material. Third, put recycling bins around your office. Having commitment from your management to encourage staff and participate will help. Start with easy actions. Here are a few ideas that help you start recycling.

  • Set your photocopiers and printers to print on both sides by default.
  • Make computer files instead of paper files.
  • Backup files can be saved on external hard drives or over the internet in a secure location.
  • Use free or inexpensive software programs, such as Stickies or NoteWhen, instead of sticky notes or note pads.
  • Have each staff person set aside paper they only use on one side for printing draft papers or scratch paper.
  • Recycle your cartridges.
  • Invest in rechargeable batteries and battery chargers for digital cameras, flashlights, and other small devices

City of Houston has several drop- off locations for recycling. For more information please visit
