Homemade Glass Cleaner

In order to create a homemade glass cleaner, you will need the following ingredients:

  • About 7 pints cold water (108 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup soapy ammonia
  • 1 pint rubbing alcohol

Instructions:

  1.  Fill a 1- or 2-gallon bucket with the water. Carefully add the ammonia and rubbing alcohol.
  2.  Mix well and pour into spray bottles.
  3. To distinguish this clear liquid from other cleaners, tint it with a drop or two of blue food coloring.

Windex Invention

Windex was invented by Harry R. Drackett and has been manufactured since 1933 by S.C. Johnson & Son.  The glass cleaner was introduced during the Great Depression as an automobile windshield cleaner and it was sold in metal cans.

Construction Cleaning Tip

Clean and dry windows outside in one direction, then inside in the other direction.  If you see a streak, you will know which side is the offender.

Vacuum Cleaner Invention

The vacuum cleaner, initially named as carpet sweeper, was invented by Daniel Hess in the United States.  The machine had rotating brush like the modern vacuum cleaners and had a bellow mechanism on the top of the body to generate suction.  Daniel Hess received a patent for his carpet sweeper on July 10, 1860.

Janitorial Cleaning Tip

A little vanilla poured on a piece of cotton and placed in the refrigerator will eliminate odors. After cleaning the refrigerator add a dash of lemon extract to the rinse water for a fresh scent.
